New Year’s Day is the Chinese traditional festival, Yuan is called “beginning”, where the number of the beginning called “Yuan”; Denier is called “day”. Yuandan, meaning “initial day”. It first appeared in the Book of Jin: “Emperor Dresal to Meng Xia January Yuan, in fact, is Shuo New Year’s Day spring.” That is, the first month is called Yuan, the first day for denier.

New Year’s Day in different times, the specific time is not the same. In the Xia Dynasty period of the Xia calendar to spring January for the first month; The Yin calendar of the Shang Dynasty took December as the first month in winter, and the Zhou calendar took November as the first month in winter. The Qin Dynasty, and to winter October for the first month, the first day of October as New Year’s Day, Emperor Wudi period, the provisions of spring January for the first month, the first day of January called New Year’s Day, has been used to the end of the Qing Dynasty.

After the revolution of 1911 overthrew the Qing Dynasty, the government of the Republic of China decided to use the Gregorian calendar, which called January 1 “New Year’s Day”. Later, the People’s Republic of China was founded. In order to better communicate with the world, it also decided to adopt the universal Gregorian calendar, which is now our common solar calendar. So, before the “New Year’s Day” became the Spring Festival, and the Gregorian calendar on January 1 is replaced as New Year’s Day.
